The Northern Rockies Fire Science Network (NRFSN) seeks to enhance communication between managers and scientists about fire management issues and research products. The NRFSN aims to facilitate interactions between managers and scientists; identify fire and fuel research needs; and improve access to knowledge and tools to serve those needs.
The Northern Rockies Fire Science Network is part of a national network of consortia established by the JFSP to accelerate the awareness, understanding, and adoption of wildland fire science information by federal, tribal, state, local, and private stakeholders in the Northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The NRFSN is being developed in collaboration with Joint Fire Science Program, Rocky Mountain Research Station, National Forest System, National Park Service, the University of Montana, University of Idaho, Montana State University, and Salish Kootenai College.
Update: On January 23, 2012, the Northern Rockies Fire Science Network formally joined the national JFSP Knowledge Exchange Consortia Network. Based on needs assessment results, planned activities include website development, identifying research needs, research synthesis, local fieldtrips, and annual workshops. To receive information about fire science news and events in the Northern Rockies, join the NRFSN mailing list.
Fire and fuels science communication survey in February-April: During our Spring 2011 needs assessment, fire and fuels specialists and decision makers said they most frequently used Internet searches and communication with coworkers to access fire research (See Methods of Accessing Fire Research, Most Frequently Used Methods). Our 2012 survey will help us understand informal communication networks among coworkers, so we can more effectively disseminate fire science through these networks. Results will be reported on this website in Fall 2012.
